Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

Couple of things here, first are the names to which he refers to us, temporary residents and foreigners.  These names tell me that we do not belong here.  We are only visiting, and we should not get comfortable because we will be going home someday.  Next is the war against our soul.  Our enemy doesn't want us going to Heaven so he distracts us with a desire for the here and now.  This verse says that it is war.  To win a war there must be death, so if we give into the desire, we will lose our soul.  Keep up your guard; we are only temporarily here.
